Skiing

The 4 Valleys is the largest ski area in Switzerland. It links the resorts of Thyon, Veysonnaz, Nendaz, La Tzoumaz and Verbier. You will find a paradise for Skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports in Valais. The ski domain of the 4 Valleys has two areas : Printze (Thyon, Veysonnaz, Nendaz) and for the more advanced skiers Verbier-Mont-Fort can also be added (Verbier, la Tzoumaz, Mont-Fort). With such variety, the resort is perfect for skiers and snowboarders, beginners and experts.

There are also two heliports to cater for heli-skiing. The highest point in the area, the Mont-Fort glacier, at 3300m, offers stunning skiing and breathtaking views of the Matterhorn, Dent Blanche, Grand Combin and the entire Swiss Alps across to Mont-Blanc in France. Due to its altitude, the area is usually covered with natural snow but the run home to Chalet Sonnailles also benefits from having snow canons to provide artifical snow on the piste throughout the seaon. The local ski area is ideal for the whole family, with several trails for beginners, the Petit Vallon (with its free minigliss carpet) and the Piccolo to help you learn to ski or snowboard. La Muraz can also be used for ski or snowboard races and is free to use. Equipment can be rented at the ski school. The snowpark in Thyon is one of the most popular in the Alps, catering for all standards from beginner to professional.

Chalet Sonnailles is located at a little over 1650m above the snowline on Les Masses (30) piste. The run has a brand new fast chair lift installed for the 2013/14 season.

Lift passes can be ordered in advance on line or from the the lift station below the chalet. For those requiring ski equipment there are two ski rental shops located within 5 minutes drive of the chalet. Ski lessons or ski guiding can also be arranged through the Swiss Ski School at Thyon at additional cost.

Ski conditions are best between December to April, but skiing may even be possible from November to May in some areas. Lifts are open daily from 8.45am to 4.30pm. The Valais region boasts nine resorts of over 3000m, these include Arolla, Crans-Montana, Saas-Fee and Zermatt. All are within easy reach of Chalet Sonnailles.
